About the SITEI 2023 Conference

Since its inception in 2012, the Sustainability in the Extractive Industries (SITEI) Conference has become the most impactful annual conference in the extractive sector. It serves as a platform for critical conversations on social, environmental, and governance issues, providing businesses and governments with targeted tools, activities, and policies to address these challenges. Our interactions with key stakeholders over the years have revealed the detrimental effects of factors such as environmental changes, unequal access to employment, limited involvement in decision-making, disruptions to social patterns, land inaccessibility, and increased vulnerability.

While the extractive industries – oil and gas, mining and agriculture – hold promise for progress in host communities, they also present risks if not managed effectively. Since our inaugural conference, we have been dedicated to positively impacting the Nigerian extractive industries, and our work speaks for itself. This year’s conference aims to educate stakeholders in the extractive sector about gender inclusion, equity, and community engagement. The SITEI Conference is an initiative of CSR-in-Action‘s non-profit arm, CSR-in-Action Advocacy, and is part of the larger SITEI Initiative. This initiative has already led to the adoption of Community Engagement Standards by the Federal Government and the implementation of SITEI-Woman, a programmatic intervention challenging cultural and systemic barriers that hinder women’s progress in host communities in Nigeria. We have also undertaken long-term interventions such as the production of the Earth Women documentary and the Things Dey Happen radio drama series.

The successful execution of the SITEI conference can be attributed to our knowledgeable and dedicated independent non-profit board, led by a highly respected professor and former vice chancellor. We have also established a SITEI Working Group comprised of non-profit sector volunteers who advise on advocacy activities. Furthermore, the SITEI Steering Committee, consisting of industry leaders from the extractive industries and government parastatals, guides us in selecting relevant topics, engaging speakers, and structuring the conference to address sector-specific concerns. We take pride in our integrity and have enjoyed the support of reputable brands such as the Ford Foundation, which provides holistic program support, as well as other leading industry institutions.

In conjunction with the conference, we will also host the annual Community and Human Rights (CAHR) Africa Awards. These awards recognise and reward individual and business best practices in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts.

We firmly believe that your participation in the SITEI conference will align perfectly with your social responsibility goals and have a profound impact on the extractive sector and Nigeria as a whole. For sponsorship details about the conference, kindly fill this sponsorship form, visit our website or follow us on our social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
