Exciting Announcement: GRI Deepens Collaboration with the IFRS Foundation

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the International Financial Reporting Standards Foundation (IFRS Foundation) have announced their collaboration to align sustainability reporting standards, aiming to reduce duplication and complexity for companies. This strengthened collaboration is a strategic step towards establishing a more integrated and comprehensive framework for sustainability reporting. The partnership between GRI’s Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB) and the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) marks a turning point in the global field of sustainability reporting. The goal of working together to achieve seamless interoperability and standard alignment is to give businesses a uniform framework for reporting on their sustainability impacts, risks, and opportunities. For Nigerian companies, the benefits are substantial, including simplified compliance with new regulations, enhanced global recognition with local relevance, future-proofed reporting practices, and a reduction in reporting burdens.

GSSB and the ISSB will collaborate to ensure their standards are seamlessly interoperable. This alignment will allow organisations to report more effectively on their impacts, risks, and opportunities, including those resulting from their impacts. GRI and IFRS will collaborate on GRI 101 and the newly published Biodiversity Standard. The International Sustainability Standards Board’s upcoming project on Biodiversity, Ecosystems, and Ecosystem Services will be part of this pilot, aimed at aligning methodologies and disclosures. This collaboration will enhance the quality and consistency of sustainability reporting.

The goal of this collaboration is to provide organisations with a seamless, global, and comprehensive sustainability reporting system that meets their stakeholders’ various requirements for information. A reduction in complexity and an improvement in the comparability of sustainability reports are what stakeholders should anticipate from more cohesive and uniform reporting methods.

Since IFRS and GRI standards are aligned, it will be easier to integrate GRI into current financial and sustainability reporting frameworks, thus making it the preferred option for businesses looking for all-inclusive sustainability reporting solutions.
