Attempted Suicide In Nigeria Should Be Decriminalised, Says Asido Foundation

Leading the charge to transform mental health care in Nigeria is the Asido Foundation, whose mission is to ensure that everyone has optimal mental health.  Through advocacy, awareness, and reform, the Asido Foundation has been a beacon of hope, eradicating stigma and fostering a culture of empathy and understanding. They have also empowered communities by offering evidence-based interventions and information, making a significant contribution to the mental health care landscape of the country.

To get support for decriminalising attempted suicide in Nigeria, the Asido Foundation approached Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney General, and Honourable Minister of Justice. During a recent advocacy visit, the Foundation also urged the Minister’s backing for the implementation of the Mental Health Act, which is crucial for protecting the human rights of persons with mental disorders.

The Asido Foundation delegation, led by Mr. Niyi Olowola, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Director CSR-in-Action, included Dr. Jibril Abdulmalik, Founder and CEO; Mrs. Yetunde Enendu, Regional Coordinator I for the Abuja Region; and Dr. Chibuzo Anoje, Regional Coordinator II for Abuja. The initiative reflects the Foundation’s commitment to mental health care reform and protecting the rights and dignity of individuals impacted.

Mr. Niyi Olowola urged policymakers in Nigeria to adopt international mental health standards.  He stated that “According to the World Health Organisation, one in every four persons is at risk of a mental disorder. We urge the government to take immediate action to decriminalize attempted suicide and implement the Mental Health Act. Decriminalizing attempted suicide will enable Nigeria to join a host of nations that offer support instead of punishment for mental health issues.”

Mental health is an important part of our entire well-being, with significant implications. Nigeria can decrease the stigma associated with mental illness, increase access to mental health care, and improve its general quality of life by campaigning for mental health reform.

The Asido Foundation calls on all stakeholders, including government bodies, mental health experts, the media, religious leaders, and the public, to unite in promoting mental health well-being.
