CSR-in-Action and Carbon Direct Introduce Comprehensive Carbon Credit Management to Africa

Africa is standing at a critical crossroads in the global response to climate change. With rising industrialisation, rapid urbanisation, and mounting energy demand, the continent faces the dual challenge of driving economic growth while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing this challenge requires more than ambition—it demands credible science-based solutions and practical implementation.

On 25 August 2025, CSR-in-Action, a sustainability and ESG consultancy with global multi-stakeholder convening expertise, announced a strategic collaboration with Carbon Direct Inc., a leading science-based carbon management firm. The collaboration is designed to accelerate Africa’s transition to a low-carbon pathway by making advanced carbon management tools, expertise, and training accessible to African businesses, governments, and investors.

Beyond Frameworks: From Strategy to Implementation

The collaboration, established under a Memorandum of Understanding, will provide access to advanced carbon accounting, reporting, and risk management services aligned with leading frameworks such as the GRI, TCFD, and ISSB. But critically, it goes beyond compliance. Organisations will receive support in practical implementation—including deploying emission-reducing technologies, accessing climate finance, and building internal capacity in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS).

In addition, the collaboration will extend to carbon credit and offset advisory, with a focus on projects such as flare gas recovery and mangrove restoration. These initiatives reflect a holistic approach: reducing emissions at the source while restoring ecosystems that capture and store carbon.

Building on a Legacy of Sustainability Leadership

CSR-in-Action brings to this collaboration more than fourteen years of sustainability advocacy and governance experience. Its contributions include the Community Engagement Standards in Nigeria, the Earth Women documentary—winner of the 2023 Global Impact Documentary Award—and the widely referenced CSR-in-Action Report on Sustainability Reporting. This proven track record provides a strong foundation for working with Carbon Direct to deliver practical, Africa-focused decarbonisation outcomes.

Carbon Direct, for its part, is globally recognised for science-based solutions in industrial decarbonisation, carbon removal, and rigorous carbon accounting. As Dr. Julio Friedmann, Chief Scientist at Carbon Direct, explained:
“Our principles, tools, and practical experience put us in a unique position to help organisations make and manifest ambitious but actionable climate commitments.”

Meeting Africa’s Urgent Needs

For Africa, where energy-intensive industries remain central to national economies, the need is urgent. According to Dr. ‘Bekeme Olowola, Group Chief Executive of CSR-in-Action:
“African businesses and governments don’t just need roadmaps—they need practical, financeable solutions, training and hands-on expertise, to implement them. Through this collaboration, we are equipping stakeholders with the tools, knowledge, and access to experts required to deliver measurable decarbonisation outcomes.”

By combining CSR-in-Action’s regional insight and convening power with Carbon Direct’s scientific expertise, this collaboration opens a pathway for African organisations to meet growing stakeholder demands, secure climate finance, and build competitiveness in an increasingly sustainability-driven global economy.

A Step Towards Africa’s Low-Carbon Future

The collaboration represents a vital step forward in ensuring that African organisations do not only respond to climate pressures but also seize opportunities in the evolving carbon economy. By creating access to science-driven strategies and training, CSR-in-Action and Carbon Direct are positioning African stakeholders to take measurable action towards a resilient, low-carbon future.
