THE GOOD CITIZEN SHOW S06E49 – CHRISTMAS SERIES

Bekeme: Hi, guys. It’s another beautiful, beautiful Friday. I hope you’re doing well wherever you are, not too disturbed by the traffic, by the fuel situation. I hope you’re intentionally remaining positive through all of this. My name is Bekeme aka Mummy GO. You’re listening to the Good Citizen show. It’s a special day every day for me, if you know me. And I’m just so glad to be here to talk to you about what it is to be in Nigerian, to be a good citizen regardless of everything and anything that is happening around you. So today we’re going to talk about going to continue with our Christmas series. And we’re talking about how to keep the cheer, the spirit, how to keep the cheer. And like I said earlier, it’s not easy at all. But this chair we must keep, especially with Christmas coming up. I mean, Thelma who’s a show runner, tried to slow the cheer for me yesterday. So yesterday we tried to do a giveaway at the mall at Sangotedo and it was a big flop o, she’s saying she’s shaking her head no. Can you imagine actually going to give up money?  Anyway, so as soon as I keep the chair, you can call in today, really to tell us about any special talent. I think as we’re keeping the chair, you can actually call to sing a carol and win money since we couldn’t give the money out yesterday, but don’t call and not contribute to our conversation just to win our money because we still have a guest today who’s going to talk to us about something special that he’s doing. I have with me Timothy Aderemi He’s a visionary, I would say, and he’s also a pastor. And I think it’s a good mix to have those two together because you don’t want to go to a congregation where they always tell you somebody is after you, do you? It also goes to one that encourages you that you can be the best version of yourself. Anyway, he has this wonderful initiative called the Baton Show. And you heard it from the name. The Baton Show is about literally handing over the baton to a new generation. And what he does, I think it’s awesome. I just wonder how he thought about it. It’s about recognising young people who are outstanding in whatever field of endeavor that they choose or that shows them. So, he had a show, his first show, last two weeks. Last two weeks. And I thought it was wonderful. I mean, I was like because you know what they say about the prophet not being respected in their hometown. So, my youngest daughter calls herself a golf predicate and she was actually recognized. She’s won club national tournament. So, she is really good. But, you know, these are the things that we do every day. We all do sports in my house. I even won my estates competition last week. I’m the single champion. It’s not easy being me, but it’s not about me. I’m already past generation. So basically, he had his first show, and I was very impressed because one of our favorite young gospel artists was there, Makayla. So, my daughter was saying, oh, we had found this this person was there like so who? And said, Makayla that eh Makayla. Which Makayla was that? And it was the Makayla who sang. It can be anybody. Itiafa do you want to sing? Mama Tony? Makayla mi wanchano just put your best time go no, something the word take care of tomorrow. She’s shy. So, my daughter Itiafa is here as well. She’s like, oh, I want to be on the show as usual, because it’s Christmas. And I’m like, Hi. There she goes. So, this has made her this is her two minutes of fame, actually, 10 seconds of fame. But thank you so much for coming on the show. Timothy Aderemi, thank you so much. I love what you’re doing with the kids. So basically, the baton show is really about recognizing this young talent and introducing them to establish first things in order that they have the opportunity for mentorship. Am I correct? Correct. Right. So, tell me a little bit about what’s a little more about what this is about.

Timothy: All right. Thank you, Mrs. Bekeme for having me. Thank you. Everyone listening. My name is Timothy again will do just fine. All right. The Baton Show basically is about an idea that I conceived alongside my son

Bekeme: Who’s here actually, Samuel says hello.

Timothy: It was just something that we thought about that as adults we do exist forever. So, in every spare of life, some people pass a button to you. The show basically is to acknowledge, identify children who have identified their gift, and then we help them to refine it. We help them to deploy. So, this show is basically about three Ds of every child. So, the first D is we help to develop no, sorry. To discover, to develop and to deploy every gift of every child.

Bekeme: Discover, develop and deploy.

Timothy: Okay, so every child has every right to become the best that they can be. But it takes a parent in fact, you know, in Africa, they say it takes one person to give birth to a child, but it takes a community.

Bekeme: To raise that child.

Timothy: To raise that child. The Baton Show is really about raising a community of people who can give every child the voice that they’re being given by God. So, there are voices around. I mean, you’re doing a great job as a presenter or radio OAP, but you learnt this from somebody directly or indirectly, someone pass the baton to you. So, this is not just about this, is not just about music. It’s about every day of life. And it’s that community of the older generation who are legend, who will be ready to hold the hands of the young people. The mistake that you have made as a legend, you don’t want them to make this a mistake. So, we help them to develop. To discover forgive me, you have to develop and to deploy every gift that every child has. So that’s what the Baton Show is about. We try annually to create an opportunity to spotlight the children that we have been able to walk through that 3D. So, we look for them, we discover them, we help them to refine their gift. And on the show, we showcase them to the world. Yeah, that water for this one. And then within that one year of engagement, there are many things that we do. We want to present a child whose values are not eroded. So, it’s a complete experience for them. So, it’s not just defining their gift. We want them to stand out anywhere in the world. Just recently, at the last World Cup, we have one of our own do a song at the last at the World Cup. That is what the Baton Show would do for everyone who will go through a system that they can stand anywhere in the world to showcase their gift. So that’s what this Baton Show is all about.

Bekeme: That’s fantastic. So, what did you do this first time? And who are the people that you recognise?

Timothy: The Battle Show this year is going to move from sector to sector. So, we focus on music, we focused on young children who are in the creative space, and then we focused on sport. That was one of the reason its Iron was able to get the Super Aron. Yeah, golf. Because we also want to create interest in golf for children. A number of young people are now interested in golf, so when they see some of their counterparts doing this, it encourages interestingly this year we had two or three people, young people who are now very interested in learning how to play golf. And they heard that on the show we had Temilayo about doing a fantastic music player. He plays the sax. She took us to the roof. In fact, on the show we had the youngest talking drummer in the world. She’s a five-year-old young lady. She’s an entertainer to the core, Ayowura that’s her name. We had Makayla again, just blew everywhere. We had this violinist Jesse who also performed so many of them in the room. It’s on. And we have young kids that are getting into drama. We had the Ikorodu boys, Chinedu, we had the teenager who is now I can’t remember his name nowhere. But that show in fact, one of the things that happened with the show is that a lot of parents started asking us, how can they be a part of it? How can their son be featured at the next Baton Show? Many of the them asking, Mummy, I’ve been telling you about this person. I can do better than this person. So the Baton Show is also to create a platform for them to express their God given talent. So that’s what this show is about.

Bekeme: That’s fantastic. So the thing is, over the years in our clam it’s just being a whole lot of go to school, go to school, go to school, go and study, read, book, and it’s not a bad thing. And I do see, obviously, the Baton show recognizing children who are outstanding and stuff like robotics and stuff like that. But the truth is that those guys who are typically don’t learn it from the confines of school. They pursue it as a passion beyond the school gates. Right? So it’s now really a thing about parents actually helping children to flourish. Because if you think about it, before we came in here, we were talking to you and you said, oh, my son was a strong catalyst for this happening. He’s passionate about football. He’s a creative, if you think about Itaron, who’s my daughter, by the way, her dad is a keen golfer, has won himself many awards in golf, and then Itiaron was there to pick it up. He was available to take her long for her to now refer to herself as they bring it by herself or even the tournament I was talking about, that I played the tennis tournament that I played. I was filled with great trepidation. I was concerned about fooling myself, as we say, this part of the world, because I just didn’t think that I was ready. I had not been practicing. I had played just twice in four months. But I kept on saying to myself, if you’re constantly worried about losing or losing face or things like that, then how do you encourage your kids to go for these things? Because I always say to my kids, well, there’s a competition. Just go, you do your best, blah, blah, blah. But I myself, I found that I was under constant stress when I needed to put myself in that situation. I actually dodged those things. But Idid it because I wanted to prove that. I wanted to encourage them to see that you had to put yourself out there. I mean, they’ve been doing it, but just to do it again. And my daughter then came and played with her contemporary. She came from school. She hadn’t practiced either, and she did it. But basically, what I’m trying to point out is that there is a role that caregivers. It’s a critical role that caregivers play and how do you then intend to drive this going forward?  I know people are asking questions. You’ve done your first show. How do you intend to sustain it? And before you go and I want to remind people that the number to call is 0700923923923 It’s the good citizen show. We’re talking about keeping the cheer every time during the Christmas period and beyond. And if you have any ideas that you’ve executed anything very much like this, then call link to share with us. If you want to contribute to his calling, share with us and we will give you a gift for being with us because it’s only a couple of days before Christmas. Let’s keep the cheer. So, we’re happy to take calls. All right. So, you are going to say, yeah.

Timothy: I think one of the things I would like to just have to do is that parenting is not you can’t do parenting passively parenting is not about being passive, is being actively involved in the discovery, in the development and the deployment of your child’s unique abilities. And many times, people love to focus on the outcome but you don’t get the desired outcome by wishful thinking. You are thinking oh my, one day my daughter will be this, my son will be this. You got to roll your sleeves and get involved. I see the long tennis guru, the two ladies what’s her name? The Williams.

Bekeme: The Williams sisters.

Timothy: The father was very intentional. So beyond the compliment of being a parent, it’s much more than compliment. It has to be a commitment. And so that’s my commitment to parents to stay committed to.

Bekeme: We have a call

Caller: Hello, good evening.

Bekeme: Hello. Good evening. Thank you for calling the Good Citizen show. What’s your name?

Caller: My name is Isaac.

Bekeme: Hello Isaac. What’s your contribution today? Thank you.

Caller: That’s the only thing I think you guys also emphasise on children. The more aspect the moral aspect is very important. Peer group, when the children are seeing their fellow children have been morally upbringing, it is changing them to fall apart. Sometimes roots are discovering some talent, some football or other talented aspect of their life. Sometimes that moral aspects which is pointing towards the crater of their lives are very important. Everything you are doing as a Christian once that is governing Italians and other part of their lives, don’t forget the code which is their creator. So, the more aspect and Bible stand that would lead their life to the sport, the more aspect of them mostly are very important. So, the more aspect and their credible there should be an awareness to them concerning their creator who is the Lord Jesus Christ. So that should be should also be emphasized much in the last of children. Sometimes in their peer group and their school they teach them something wrong. But when the moral aspect like you guys is doing now, I think you go a long way.

Bekeme: Thank you very much feedback for you. Right, so great. Do send us a message 09062634131 to get good price money from us. Thank you so much for calling Isaac. Very valid contribution. How do we balance that aspect? So, yes, you’re throwing for greatness, especially when you talk about the creatives and so many of these things. I was talking to someone recently, and they were saying to me, you know what? Your child should go into this sport. And I said, I’m not that keen on that sport because I think they’re very well. And then he says, but that’s why you’re coming. That’s where you’re coming. You always have to have a parent on hand. You don’t leave them to the wolves. You don’t think, oh, there are these opportunities and so coaches take charge. Those ones are probably thinking about glory or money. They’re not thinking about your child’s well being per se. Yes, that’s a role that the parent plays. So how are you tending to incorporate all of these things? We have another called hello. Please bear that in mind. Hello, good afternoon. Thank you for calling the Good citizen show. What’s your name, please?

Caller: My name is Comrade

Bekeme: Hello, comrade. Thank you for calling again.

Caller: The issue is a very broad one. You have started. Let’s contribute. We not will not the issue of parenting. Right from when I do recognize Nigeria churches came in with their own doctrine of prosperity. When I was growing up in the parenting was more or less like a defined calling. Yes, and you will believe I was one of those who benefited from very good educational policy in the my teachers were dedicated. I was not really smart in my primary school, but I had this football talent, and my game master recognised it. I was not good at arithmetic then it was arithmetic, mathematics, and he found out that I had this talented football, but I was dull in arithmetic. Mr. Barnett, I’ll never forget him. Mr. Barnett asked me to come early so that he could teach me arithmetic before the school. And he took me into the library, and the library wouldn’t be there, but he opened the door and started teaching me sort of that was a teacher who saw something good in me. My parents were illiterate, but today I’m a medical doctor. I know why I played that soccer as a professional, even up to four or five years for going to the university.

Bekeme: Wow.

Caller: So, my two talents, the one that was subdued was brought up by my teacher and the one that was given to me by God. I encouraged also played a role in showing me that life is a journey and life is not filled up with bed of roses. But what I will get in now from the churches, what are we getting from our community. What are we getting now from even our parents?. Make money. Go there. Make money. Educationa system too has not helped. I saw my I had my wife, she’s a primary school teacher. What I learned 60, 70 years ago.

Bekeme: But if you say you learnt from his 67 three years ago oh, come on.

Caller: We need to change the whole curriculum. It’s not helpful.

Bekeme: All right, thank you so much. I think I lost him. But thank you so much for your contribution. So we need to do a bit more. And I think that’s what you’re doing already by introducing something like this, something innovative like the Baton show. I think in my mind, what I see is us trying to create a wholesome child, right?

Timothy: It’s not just showbiz. There are many things that are included in everything. So, the moral aspect, I think I mentioned that we want to showcase a child who is morally I mean, his values are not eroded by anything. He knows God, whether he’s a Muslim or a Christian. He understands that he’s created by God and the purpose for which he’s doing this he knows it and is not swayed by even acclaim of men. So there are many things that we’re doing. But the show, this is just one opportunity to show the world where these people are per time

Bekeme: That’s awesome.  Samuel do you have anything to say to us? Not yet. You’re still thinking about it? We promised you you would talk, but you still haven’t thought of that. Itiafa you are itching to give us your point of view.

Itiafa: Please. No?

Bekeme: Okay. I can’t. Got her tongue. You see life, right? Be prepared for opportunity to come.

Itiafa: I have something to say but I can’t remember.

Bekeme: Oh Lord. Think about it some more. So you have some really valid contributions. Thinking about the Baton show and the longevity. Like I asked earlier, what do you want people to know about it? What are you intending to do? How do you intend to organise these programs? Is there a website that people can go to? How do people know? A little bit more. How do you even choose the children that you feature on the show?

Timothy: All right, so like I said, every child, irrespective of their class, whether poor or rich, they are given special gifts from God. And so what we are asking for everyone who wants to there are different ways by which we even have developed systems on how to even identify a child gift. So even if your parent is not paying attention, we can help you to discover it and they would develop it and they will help you to deploy it so just put that 3D aside. Like I said, we are creating a community. So, if you are mentor again, this is not just about music, it’s not about entertainment kids creating haps if you know any child, irrespective of the location that the child is please send us an email. You can send us an email. You can send us a message. We will respond to you if you see any child. Because every child has a voice, and so location or the experience of life should not deprive that child of the voice that God has given. So send us an email.

Bekeme: What’s the email to send to?

Timothy: The batonshowng@gmail.com the same thing on all our social media and do if you go to Instagram is at the Batonshowng. We’re working on website currently. And so for parents who have seen or discovered their kids talent, you can also reach to us. We have a pool of mentors lead people who have gone through the path maybe their child is trying to. So, we connect them and we measure progress. It’s about impact. So we measure the impact of the engagement, especially for twelve months. So, they go to a program of twelve months, and then after twelve months you see what and who they are becoming. So, parents, mentors. If you want to sign up to be a part of us, batonshoong@gmail.com.

Bekeme: Batonshootng@gmail.com. Or on the social media channels, facebook, Instagram, Instagram okay. Thank you so much for talking to us about this. I think it’s a very important discussion. We keep on saying children are the leaders of tomorrow, but everybody keeps on focusing on the now and giving a claim to everybody. And I think that it’s fantastic that we look into developing kids. I also think that in contribution to in addition to what Isaac has said, I think that when you put children to be mentored by people, I think that you should also track that because there are all sorts of bad, seemingly good people in the world.

So it’s important that we protect our children. Thank you again so much, Timothy Aderemi, for coming on the show. You want to say something? This is a final word and that’s why I give the gmail address, so that people can reach you because we do have to round up. Time goes by really quickly. Thank you all so much for listening on the show. Comrade Anyam, please send us a message as well on 09062634131 I hope you all have a fantastic and very merry Christmas.

Bekeme Another 2 seconds and Samuel joining. Thank you so much, my Baton show leaders for joining us. Have a wonderful, wonderful Christmas.Till next year. Bye.
