The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has existed for 70 years in 20 African countries including the United states, United Kingdom, and France. Started with mission to be a role model for African businesses, UBA is carrying on with a vision to be the undisputed leading and dominant financial services institution in Africa. As a financial service group in Sub-Saharan Africa with presence in 19 countries. UBA has one of the largest distribution networks in Nigeria.

As part of UBA’s efforts at sustainability, the bank has a Chief Sustainability Officer who is responsible for implementing the Nigeria Sustainable Banking Principles. Through the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of the bank – UBA Foundation, the bank invests in communities where it has a presence. The foundation was incorporated in 2004. The UBA Foundation is funded with 1% of the bank’s profit after tax. The Foundation’s interventions are in the areas of education, empowerment and environment.

UBA Foundation draws its inspiration from the Group’s intrinsic values of humility, empathy, resilience, integrity and its mission statement. The foundation abides by the utmost professional and ethical standards, creating an enduring institution. These values have and will always be the factors that inspire us to “Do well and Do Good”. The bank’s focus is to enable activities that support the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).

2020 Highlights

UBA donated to programmes and partners that provide medical responses, food security and support to vulnerable people across Africa. Through the UBA foundation, the bank also donated to support a comprehensive Pan-African response to fight against the coronavirus pandemic. This donation was geared towards supplying relief materials, critical care facilities and financial support to governments. The bank also provided free telemedicine platform for citizens to have direct access to medical advice as they complied with social distancing pronouncements by various governments.

UBA as a member of the Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID), a private sector task force partnering with the federal government, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) provided technical and operational to support the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria. UBA made a direct donation of N500 million and facilitated the raising of over N30 billion by the coalition CACOVID as of June 2020.

Read Africa 2020 is an initiative of the UBA foundation geared at rekindling the dwindling reading culture amongst African youth. The project is to help children go through novels and dream to be inspired by the stories they read about. The project is also aimed at promoting the talent of African Authors and focuses on African stories. In 2020, the foundation donated 20, 000 books to youth across the continent. A virtual Read Africa was held as well as Read Africa Tanzania, Read Africa Kenya, Read Africa Zambia and Read Africa Brazzaville.
