The services sector accounts for 49.73% of Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP) and the sector has shown impressive gains amid tough economic circumstances. Sustainability is an important parameter in deciding the effectiveness and quality of any service in terms of economic and social benefits and though this sector benefits job creation, it has a greater potential to advance environmental sustainability than other sectors because it can more easily deliver sustainable services by incorporating eco-friendly systems into its operations. For instance, it can accommodate sustainable packaging, reduced air pollution, use of recycled materials and even first-hand influence on consumers.
Key Regulations and Principles
The Nigerian Coalition of Services Industries (NCSI) was created in 2018 as the agency that will function as a lobby group to support trade in services, validate Nigeria’s service priorities, and formulate insights and advise on Nigeria’s positions in domestic, regional, continental, and global trade discussions. The NCIS also identifies strategies for improving Nigeria’s competitiveness for Trade in Services.
