ABOUT CSIR
The Corporate Sustainable Investor Report (CSIR)

Formerly called the Collective Social Investment Report, the CSIR is Nigeria’s first widely circulated and inclusive compendium of companies sustainability performance. The CSIR is designed to be a one-stop shop for summarised information on companies’ practices in environmental, social and governance activities that impact bottom line in the immediate or long term.

More about the CSIR
Vision
To be the one-stop report for analytical and material sustainability data for companies across diverse sectors.
Mandate
To foster the adoption of best practices by providing standardised comparative indices on the sustainability approach of organisations in Nigeria (and West Africa).
Methodology
We operate an extensive data collection mechanism, which measures the ways companies have contributed to the development and longevity of the societies within which they operate.

History

The premier CSIR was endorsed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and launched in 2012 at the 17th Nigerian Economic Summit

Other Reports

The CSIR empowers local and international stakeholders, and enables them to make informed decisions about companies they interact with, by providing knowledge about their social investments, attitude to employees, progress and approach to the triple bottom line and easy access to information during research.

The first report in 2012 was endorsed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and launched at the 17th Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja.
In addition to the assessment of companies' social investments, the 3C-Index was introduced into the report in 2013 to rank performance against industry and best practise standards.
With Accenture and Ernst & Young as knowledge partners, we produced a more robust encyclopedia of corporate strategies adopted by companies in the drive for sustainability.

The CSIR Framework Attributes

The CSIR framework is holistic and draws upon a blend of traditional non-financial business management principles, local regulations and principles, the globally recognised ESG (Environment, Social and Corporate Governance) principle and other internationally-implemented sustainability standards, such as that of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), and it applies the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) principles of sustainability context, materiality, comparability, clarity and balance.

Global Reporting Initiative
Objectivity
The framework is fair and integrous. We employ third party data collectors and validators along with board oversight
Measurability
The framework permits rationally consistent measurement and ranking systems
Comparability and Materiality
The framework allows for reliable comparison of material sustainability data of businesses within same sector and across sectors
Relevance
The framework is targeted at the reasonable investor, for whom the information presented would be useful for decision-making
The CSIR speaks primarily to individual and corporate investors, whilst not leaving out the general business community.

THE 2020 CSIR LAUNCH

“Companies are now more discerning of the issues surrounding governance, corporate citizenship, ethics, quality and the environment. We are witnessing increased appreciation of the concept of sustainability and the way it is communicated”.
